“In the black community doing your hair is an evolutionary beauty standard, and in some cases a revolutionary act.” ~Asia Hamilton
HAIRarchy, an exhibition curated by Asia Hamilton, founder of Norwest Gallery of Art and opening on February 8, 2020, is a salute to the creativity within black hair culture. Rooted in a complex history that continues to evolve, influence and redefine ideals of beauty, this exhibition deepens the conversation to explore black hairitage and exalt its richness from around the globe. Featuring visual artists from Detroit and across the diaspora, HAIRarchy celebrates the versatility of black hair from the blow out to being fro’d out and all styles in between. The installation illuminates the pride and glory that resides in affirming your identity, amid socio- political discomforts.
This event also commemorates the second-year anniversary for NGA, nestled in the Rosedale Park neighborhood on the city’s west side...
On view from Feb. 8 - March 1
